POLICE CAREER PROGRAM

delray beach POLICE DEPARTMENT

The Delray Beach Police Department conducts the Police Career Program at the Atlantic High School Law Enforcement Academy, coordinated through the Atlantic Community High School. The Police Career Program is designed to provide students an opportunity to take classes that teach them about police work. One officer is permanently assigned as the program coordinator. Many DBPD officers participate in this program on a voluntary basis to provide assistance with teaching, tutoring and mentoring. Students receive instruction on police procedures, criminal law, criminal investigations, and interpersonal skills. This program also provides the students an opportunity to earn three college credits upon successful completion. There were 167 students enrolled in the 2006/2007 school year; 270 have applied for the 2007/2008 term. This program also spawned a summer internship program that provided the Delray Beach Police Department with student administrative assistance. It is anticipated that this program will groom students to be future police candidates.
