In the planning phase of the department's new building, Director
Dembinsky determined the need for an area to give victims a place of
refuge on a 24 hour basis. This was accomplished by building a "Safe
Room" inside the department's lobby that was accessible to the general
public from the outside. As soon as the victim shuts the door to the
room, it could be locked and accessed only by a responding officer who
is contacted via the emergency phone located inside the room. Local
citizens are aware of the Safe Room and signs are posted outside the
building notifying potential victims of the availability and usage.
