Palm Beach Gardens Police Department is constantly striving to improve
upon their delivery of law enforcement services to the city’s citizens.
One project that stands out as innovative and supports the Department's
commitment in their efforts to continue to be a progressive agency
involves the purchase of Segway Personal
Transporters, a new type of special purpose vehicle. The
Police Department began discussing the concept of using Segways in 2003,
anticipating the growth and development of a downtown, something the
city had yet to experience. The construction of a concentrated shopping
and entertainment urban area would bring new challenges to the already
bulging city. In order to maintain law and order in this new congested
area the Department purchased two personal transporters, scheduled to be
deployed in 2007. Officers trained to operate and use the personal
transporters will be deployed in shopping areas, parks and events where
fast response times can be achieved smoothly and quietly. In addition to
the enforcement functions, the Segway offers a great conversation piece,
which will undoubtedly serve to enhance community policing as citizens
strike up conversation with officers atop their high-tech transporters.
